    This intermediate woodworking class will take students through the process of making a cabinet using several woodworking machines, including our 3HP Grizzly Shaper. The class will work together as a cohort to build one cabinet with a raised panel door. 

    Topics covered:

    • Safe use of the Shaper, its collets, and cutters
    • Use of woodshop equipment such as the router, table saw, and miter saw 
    • Cabinet-making skills
    What is a Shaper?
    In woodworking, a shaper is used to shape the edges of stock wood. In contrast to a router's bit, shapers have a rotating cutter mounted on a spindle that the user manually feeds the stock against. The cutter head has multiple cutting edges and rotates at high speeds. Shapers are more powerful and flexible than routers, and can make larger cuts in one pass with less splitting and tearout. 

    Prerequisites: This is not a class for beginners! Prior woodworking experience or successful completion of our Intro to Woodworking class is required. If you have any questions, please reach out to us at info (at) hackpittsburgh (dot) org. 

    Date and time:     Saturday, August 1st from 10:00am to 4:00pm. There will be an hour break for a takeout lunch, so please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions! 

    Safety Information: Safety glasses and ear protection will be provided. Wear closed-toed shoes and tie any long hair back for your safety. Please do not wear any loose clothing and remove any jewelry. Instructor will offer safety checkoffs for independent use upon completion of the class at his discretion.

  • Intro to Sewing Workshop with Kym

    Description: This class is an introduction to the basics of sewing with woven fabrics. Students will learn basic machine operation, sewing seams, corners, a basic zipper installation, while making a simple mini cosmetics bag using a So-Easy sewing pattern. Whether you have never used a sewing machine or need a refresher from your Home Ec class decades ago, this class is right for you! Each participant will make their own mini cosmetics bag to take home at the end of class. No experience required. All materials will be provided!

    Cost: $55 for non-members $50 for HackPGH members. Be advised:

  • Learn to Solder w/Beebo: Make & Take a Colorful Alarm Clock!

    Learn to solder and take home something fun and functional! 

    Description: This class is an introduction to soldering for the complete beginner or those who are feeling a "bit rusty" with their soldering skills.  Beebo will take students through the process of building a colorful alarm clock that can also display the date and temperature!  Each participant will take their own clock home at the end of the class. No experience required, and all materials such as soldering irons, solder, and other tools will be provided. 

    Cost: $55 for non-members, $50 for HackPGH members.

    You must pay at time of registration to hold your spot! If you wish to pay with cash or need extra time to make a payment, you must contact us by email (info(at)hackpittsburgh.org) to make alternative arrangements.   • Learn the CNC w/Andre: HackPGH Members-only Training

    Learn the basics of HackPGH's CNC with Andre! Topics covered: 

    • Basics of planning and generating G-Code using VCarve Pro software**
    • Proper use of our 4'x8' MakerFab CNC
    • Safety, Maintenance, and Cleanup techniques

    Students of this class will use the CNC router to engrave a pre-fab wooden sign.

    **No experience with CAD? Want more experience learning design for the CNC? Take "Design for the CNC Router w/Aaron!"  Contact the Board if you are interested in that class. 

    Date and time: Tuesday, August 18th from 6:30pm to 9:30pm

    Requirements: Active HackPGH Membership required. No experience necessary.

    VCarve Invites: After completing this training session, participants will receive an invite and code to join HackPGH's VCarve Makerspace account. This will allow members to download access the VCarve Trial software at home. Designs can easily be uploaded to the makerspace account, then accessed and edited later on the five VCarve Pro computers at the shop (CNC laptop, unit three, unit four, Alpha, and Johnny 5).

  • Linux Club at HackPGH: Open to the Public!

    Join us at HackPGH every third Thursday of the month for Linux Club! Meet other Linux-users, discuss glitches and fixes, work on open-source solutions, and help defeat the Micro$oft menace. Live free or die.

    No registration or RSVP needed. Just bring yourself and your computer (optional). HackPGH has two PCs with Linux distributions. 

    Date & Time: Thursday, August 20th. We welcome attendees starting at 6:00PM! Guests not accompanied by a member must leave when the last attending HackPGH member leaves. 

    Cost: Free to attend, but recommended donation for non-members is $5. HackPGH is a 501(c)(3) non-profit and your donations help us keep the lights on!

  • Intro to Wood Lathes & Turning w/Erik

    Description:     This beginner woodworking class at HackPGH covers the basics of the wood lathe and turning. We will focus on the safe operation of both free standing and benchtop wood lathes, as well as how to choose the appropriate wood and turning tools. 

      Students will learn the basics of turning with carbide AND HSS (high-speed steel) tools as well as how to prep, turn, and assemble their individual projects. Different types of hardwoods will be available for selection. This class is great for couples, friends, family, or individuals! Participants will have the choice of making one of the following items:

      • Honey dipper
      • Self-standing bottle topper
      • Bottle opener
      • Cheese planer
      • Ice cream scoop

        Carbide or HSS? The "best choice" of turning tools depends on the application. Carbide offers superior wear resistance, higher cutting speeds, and lower maintenance by allowing tip rotation rather than sharpening but can produce a rougher finish. The versatility and precision of HSS tools can achieve finer finishes and details. However, they often require special skills to use and wear out faster, requiring frequent sharpening. Students will learn the basics using one of our carbide sets. Thereafter, the instructors will help participants choose which set is best for their projects.

        Date and time: Sunday, August 23 from 1:00pm to 5:00pm. Class can go later for those needing extra help with their projects at the discretion of the instructor. There will be breaks for drinks and snacks.

        Requirements: No experience needed. All supplies and safety equipment will be provided.  Please wear closed-toed shoes and snug-fitting clothing; short sleeves if possible! Dangling jewelry should be removed, and tie back any long hair.

        Do you enjoy soldering and wish to take on a more challenging project? Did you speed run through our clock or holiday tree intro classes? Then join us for this fun and informative soldering session!  

        Description: This intermediate class will increase familiarity with soldering and electrical components and strengthen the participants' understanding of electronic theory.  Beebo will take students through the process of constructing a portable Bluetooth Speaker.  Each participant will take their own speaker, complete with remote and plug, home at the end of the class. All materials such as soldering irons, solder, speaker components, and other tools will be provided. 

        Prerequisites: Registrants must have previous hands-on soldering experience and a basic foundation of electronics knowledge OR  have completed one of HackPGH's Intro to Soldering classes. 

        Cost: $75 for non-members, $65 for HackPGH members.

        Class description:
        Learn how to craft a simple, durable "brut de forge" style knife in this intensive but fun class! Participants will learn how to safely forge high-carbon steel using HackPGH's new Atlas Knife Forge! Whether you're a complete beginner or it's been awhile since you've spent time in front of a forge, this is the class for you! Topics covered include:

        • Forge safety
        • Steel types
        • Forging
        • Heat treating 
        • Grinding & Beveling 
        • Handle preparation
        • Sharpening & Finishing

        Each student will make and take home their own knife, with limited customization options available such as length and handle finishes.  

        Prerequisites: No experience necessary. 

        Age requirement: 18+ (adults only!)

        Safety Information: Work boots or leather shoes recommended. No open-toed or cloth shoes. Remove any dangling jewelry and tie back long hair. We recommend wearing close-fitting, natural fiber clothing such as denim and cotton.

      • Intro to Woodworking w/Erik: Make & Take a Cutting Board!

        This beginner woodworking class will educate students on basic concepts and safe use of wood shop equipment, while crafting a beautiful and custom wooden cutting or bread board from a selection of hardwoods. Students will leave with an understanding and safety training on the following equipment and skills:

        • Table, Band, & Miter Saws
        • Planer
        • Jointer
        • Palm Sander
        • Using wood glue and clamps
        • Applying finish
        • Router/Router Cabinet (optional)
        • Drill press (optional)

        Structure: This class will have one group session, where the entire cohort will work through constructing their boards step by step with help from the instructor.  Students will have the option of creating a cutting board from one piece of wood or doing a "glue-up" from multiple strips of different hardwoods. There will be a one-hour lunch break near the middle of the day for a takeout lunch, so please contact us with any allergies or dietary restrictions. The instructor will offer one optional "office hour" session by appointment to aid students with their projects and provide further guidance.

      • MIG Welding 101: Make Your Own Chain Lamp!

        Join us at HackPGH for an intensive but fun and informative MIG welding class, intended for complete beginners and/or those looking to brush up on rusty skills while building something fun and functional. 

        Structure: This class provides the foundation for basic fabrication techniques using one of HackPGH's two MIG welders - the Millermatic 255 "MIGuel" and the Vulcan Omnipro 220! Students will learn to tack-weld into place and fully weld steel. Each student will make and take home an industrial lamp made from heavy duty chain with an Edison-style bulb. Several breaks will be offered throughout the day, including a long break for a group takeout lunch. Lunch will be provided, so please advise if you have any allergies or food restrictions!  

        Requirements: No experience required.  Ages 16+, minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. 

        Safety requirements: Work boots or leather shoes recommended.  No open-toed or cloth shoes. Long hair should be tied back, and and we recommend wearing natural fiber clothing such as denim and cotton. 

        Date & Time:  Saturday, September 5th from 11:00am to 5:00pm

        Cost:  $165, $150 for HackPGH Members
